The Paperless Office?

Technology can be useful. It must be useful to really make a difference in people’s lives. One thing that we are seeing more and more of, and trying to do for ourselves, is look at ways of cutting down on paper, not only for ease of use and productivity but also to help reduce paper waste.

It’s not a simple process, but with some guidance, a small and relatively inexpensive scanner and an application like Evernote, you can make significant gains and introduce a paperless system into you office, or home.

We would recommend an iBook available on the Apple App store called Paperless:

Paperless takes the mystery (and fear) out of going paperless with your Apple technology. The book includes 32 screencasts, 4 movies, over 26,000 words, and other rich-media assets to turn you into a paperless ninja. The material is accessible to beginners and power users alike with a thorough explanation of all the hardware, software, and workflows necessary to finally conquer paper.

It is a terrific read and you can learn more about it by clicking here.

Bring Your Own Devices

As well as the 3D printing revolution which we talked about in an earlier post, another trend we are seeing with companies both small and large is Bring Your Own Device or BYOD.

This is something that has gained popularity over the past years, for a number of reasons, including lower potential support costs, employees can use a device that they enjoy using or is more appropriate and more. The Wikipedia definition is below:

Bring your own device (BYOD) (also referred to as Bring your own technology (BYOT), Bring your own phone (BYOP), and Bring your own PC (BYOPC)) is a term that is frequently used to describe the policy of permitting employees to bring personally owned mobile devices (laptops, tablets, and smart phones) to their place of work and use those devices to access privileged company information and applications. The term is also used to describe the same practice applied to students using personally owned devices in education settings.

It is however, not all roses, and there are many implications to think about, not least the aspect of security! What do you think, are you doing this and is it something your company have looked at or looking at for 2013?

3D printing in your office?

There seems to be a rapidly evolving revolution happening… Not only in the US, but here in the UK too, and across the world. How about printing something, an object, when you needed it? Yes, literally printing it on your desk using a machine which you can now buy for a feww thousand pounds. Sounds a little like Star Trek doesn’t it?

It is now reality.

Our friend Jon Moss has written an article about this new printing revolution…

Technology makes me smile. Especially things like the Makerbot. Thinking back to my childhood, never in a million years would I think that we could have a (relatively) inexpensive machine, that could print things. Stuff. Objects. Sitting on a desk. In your own office or house. Quite amazing.

I’ve been loosely following the progress of the Makerbot over the past few years, mostly through the tweets and blog of my friend Brendan Dawes. To me he is Mr. 3D printing and has been tinkering away for while and has just received his latest machine, the Replicator 2.
